March Means Mindful Eating

Blog March Means Mindful Eating

This month I co -conducted three day long Mindfulness retreats. These include an easy flow of mindfulness practices and a time for a silent lunch. At the end of the day as we sit and discuss our experience, I was struck by how many people said that their favorite part of the day was the Mindful Eating. Interesting as this is something we each did on our own, and required little instruction. One participant said that he felt distracted all morning and found his mind being pulled constantly to a difficult situation at work. At lunch however he was able to drop into the present moment through an orange. “I took one of the sections and held it up to the sunlight, and saw all the delicate veins and sections. And then I tasted it. It was amazing. I felt like I had never really seen or tasted or smelled an orange before and I felt my worries drop away. The rest of the afternoon was really great for me.” There were many other reports like this. So I felt it was important to offer the  eight week Mindful Eating for Healthy Living class again. I originally became interested in this because of the compelling research on how mindfulness practice can help folks reduce compulsive and binge eating, lose weight and improve measures like BMI, insulin, cholesterol, and others. To read such study, go to http://www.health.harvard.edu/newsletters/Harvard_Health_Letter/2011/February/mindful-eating. However, I have seen that this class can also be pathway to reducing stress and enjoying life more fully. If you are convinced that you can’t do one more diet, are suffering from stress, and would like to learn better coping techniques, Please join us at Eisenhower Medical Center’s Annenberg Center on Wed April 27th 6:00 PM  (Free) and then continue with us on Wednesday evening through June 15th. This time I will be joined by expert Nutritionist Libby Quigley! To learn more call me at : 760-799-7847
